1. BUILD A PROJECT PLAN WITH MILESTONES
Before creating a plan, determine if you can dedicate a full-time team to the project or if your current team needs to
balance their existing responsibilities with the implementation project. This decision will help you set realistic timeframes as
to when milestones can be reached.
The goal is to keep your team on-track so they feel successful – you don't want them to be frustrated by
unrealistic deadlines. Include items such as parallel runs and data comparison reports so that your team
has confidence in the final results.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION
Be sure you take all of your priorities into account when setting timelines, as an example it's probably not
a good idea to set a critical implementation delivery date the same week a new benefits plan is being
rolled out to your employees.
2. DEFINE SUCCESS UP FRONT
Once the plan is created define what the measurements of success are. This will prevent scope creep from taking over
your project. When you know what your big wins are and stay focused on them you will ensure a positive implementation
outcome with measurable results.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION
If your objective with a new solution is to roll-out employee self-service for pay statements and time
capture stick to that objective. Don't let scope creep happen by adding in other features. Park the
additional features for phase two and stay focused on the big wins initially.
Companies with well-designed
project plans will realize
implementations that are
delivered on time and on
budget.
Know what you want for
outcomes so the solution
is set up correctly the first
time. Re-engineering a rushed
implementation will cost you
far more down the road.
